Kiri do you remember me?

I'm not sure how I found Barren Realms.. I was probably 9 years old (I'm 38 now)... but I got totally immersed.

My character Orpheous became a hero (druid)... and I remember testing my might against one of the Elite Guards near the temple.

Then... suddenly appearing before Kiri! And I was banned from Barren Realms!

I'll always remember that... and my amazing experience in Barren Realms.

Some of the old names still look familiar.

As I was invited by my brother to play warcraft all the memories came back to me and I just wanted to come back and say hi and thanks.

I'm sure you've banished many a cocky and brazen kid who attacked an elite guard for no reason.

I can still hear the sounds it made when it disconnected me.

Kiri hasn't been on the forum or the MUD for 10 years, so I'll do my best to answer fairly in her absence.

I'm glad you enjoyed our MUD, and it saddens me to hear that you where banned.
However, no one has ever, nor will ever, be banned "for no reason".

Being cocky and brazen sounds like it could lead to a valid reason, whereas killing a guard does not.
At the age of 38, you are probably aware that what is fun for one person, another might find terribly abusive.

There are also ways to get banned without having done anything wrong.

Ban is a really blunt instrument for dealing with abusive players, because ban is placed on a site or ip-address.
We've had a few incidents where someone on a network like a school, went out of their way to be as obnoxious as possible.
As a result, everyone on that network gets banned because of one persons actions.

That said, I don't know why you where banned. But there was probably a good reason for it, even if you didn't see it or caused it.
But why don't you come back? A ban is only temporary.
It sounds like you enjoyed it as much as I do, and we've gotten even better over the years.
Our player-base has plummeted since the great era of late 90's, but we aren't dead quite yet.

Thanks for commenting here, Orpheous. Looking at the logs (yes, we still have them from the late 90s) it appears that you were denied rather than banned, due to several relatively egregious instances of not following the rules for heroes.

With this said, that was certainly long enough ago that we'd be happy to afford you a second chance, and the technical aspects of the denial have long since passed. Please do drop back by if you feel like immersing yourself in some nostalgia (although it may take a few tries before you manage to catch more than one person on and active).

Yeah I think I roundhouse kicked an Elite Guard 150 times hehe....

I had been wanting that roundhouse combo for years I think.

I was actually never mad or bitter... and is a fond memory, even the whole summoning experience.

I loved that it wasn't taken lightly to strike a guard.

Could I possibly get my character back?

That would be so cool even to see what equipment I was wearing heheh....

Thanks for the reply.

Too bad MUDS are on the decline... best game I ever played was Barren Realms.

My parents and friends had ZERO interest and were confused how I could be so excited to sit down and type and read for hours.

AS I play WoW... it feels like so many aspects of MUDding were just made graphical. The combat role console, the emoting, the format of quests etc... Pretty cool I guess, but less imagination and control.

Dialing into a MUD is the closest thing to dialing into the matrix that I experienced ... Like a collective reading and writing of a story in real time.

I second that.
Our phonebill was so high I thought my parents would disown me.

It was worth it though...

And when you'd be in heavy battle and someone would call... and break the connection!

The impetus for that new call waiting feature! hahahah
