News from the realms:

--------------------
Sozz: Happy Birthday Canada!

Yep, it's another quest!
In honor of Canada Day, on July the 1st, there will be a quest held - starting as soon as you read this note!
You may not live in Canada, and you may not be particularly fond of Canada, but you can still participate!
I need you to find me five things (and ONLY five things) which you think represent Canada.
Or even reminds you of Canada. Or you think can be found in Canada. Or pretty much anything you can think of to link to Canada.
Now, these items don't have to be complimentary to Canada. If you think Canada sucks, then express your opinion.
This quest is open to both mortals and hero's - though one person cannot win both categories.
Any spell or skill you'd like to use is allowed, there are no restrictions.
I will be providing bags, you'll be providing the items, and a bodypart to put in your bag to identify it as yours.
The deadline will be Sunday, July 6. I will NOT be lenient on this. If I don't have your stuff by Sunday, you will NOT be counted.
You may just hand in your bag to me, but I suggest sending me an email with your list of *five* items, and an explanation for each, to tell me why you think it fits in with Canada.
My email is hcva@telus.net
And MUCH thanks to our resident Deadman for sponsoring :)

Sozz

PS: Upon reading through, I realize I may have been a little unclear. July 1st is Canada day, but this quest begins as soon as you read this note.

Disaster: had a quest today
Mon Jun 30 11:05:11 2003
To: all
i held a smurf-squishing quest today, with faustus sponsoring
players had to get drunk, and kill as many smurfs in arena as they could, some of them having tokens on them
the player with the most tokens at the end won
spar 11, drako 5, daredevil 2, enkil 1, anri 1, pakter 0, faye 0
spar, you can see faustus for your prize :)

Ghaleon: Darn the Elf!
Mon Jun 30 16:17:45 2003
To: Joysinger all
I held a quest, and it was pretty fun. I really liked it.
Participants are: Howard, Oversoul, Cataclysm, Smeagain, Twiggy, Gauss, Colibris (the first three are in order)
I hope you guys have fun and quest up! *smirk*

Disaster: results from the role-playing quest

well, i'm pleased to announce that results are finally in, and i have your prizes ready
it was VERY difficult to judge, and so subjective, it's really not even funny, so all of you are getting a prize! *this is where you go "who-hoo!" if you played and "danggit!" if you didn't*
i did my best to come up with prizes based on your participation, level, race, etc, and i really hope you all enjoy them
(in no particular order, since it was so hard ot judge) envy, faye, oversoul(well, gauche since he had the bad manners to hero ;P), kazuma and pogzor, you may see me for your prize

if you notice that your name is NOT posted, but you participated, one of two things happened:
1) i forgot you because i was so tired after the quest. if you believe this happened, i'm sorry, by all means, come talk to me asap
2) YOU CHEATED!!!!
if you fall into this second category (and one of you does-just be glad i'm not announcing your name here, and that i asked Leiland not to bamf-slay you like you deserved) then you get NOTHING
the cheater in question used an alt to locate items the questers were searching for. not just once, after which he received a warning, but TWICE, with two different characters, thinking he was being sneaky
the price of his sneakiness: spending about 3.5 hours doing the quest, and getting NOTHING for it. let this be a lesson: DON'T CHEAT!!

for those of you who didn't cheat, i hope you all enjoyed the quest as much as i did, and i look forward to being able to do similar quests in the future
once again, thanks to both Leiland (the original sponsor) and Comatose, who helped out mid-quest

Disaster: pseudo-quest
Tue Jul 1 17:39:35 2003
To: all
ok, so maybe it's not a quest, but i don't know what else to call it
if you were reading the forums a while back, you'll have noticed that Joysinger and I have a little bet going
concearning my ability to get suicide from 51-151 in under an hour
the conditions are thus:
i can do anything not disallowed by existing rules
this includes, but is not limited to, wearing a tgames sword and/or a starsword, using an alt for spellups, etc

now, THIS is where it gets interesting: you guys get to bet on the results
i'll be the bookie (due to apparently noone else wanting to do it. if you want the job instead, talk ot alicia and myself)
mort bets and hero bets are seperate, there are 3 categories of bets
1. Yes he'll make it/ No he won't. pays 1:1 mort max: $1mil hero max $50mil
bet type 2: guess the minute that he will reach 151. minute 1 is 0-59 seconds. minute 2 is 1:00-1:59 etc. minute 60 is 59:00-:59:59 (this extends past the hour marker, if you think it'll take me 1 hour 20 minutes, etc
type 2 bets cost $100k for morts, $5mil for heroes. it's winner take all, if noone guesses right, noone gets anything (that is, it's NOT the closest, you need to be exact)
ties will be divided evenly, of course, if more than one person guesses the correct minute. OOPS, it's not "winner takes all" -if noone gets it exact, then the closest person will get half the pot
type 3 bet: what level will i be at the 30 minute mark? max mortal bet $300k max hero bet $10mil. gussing right earns you 10x your bet, being the closest earns you 5x your bet
the start time has yet to be decided-we'll keep you posted
alicia will be the final decision maker when it comes to determining who wins. you may only bet as one mortal and as one hero, not as every single one of your alts
obviously, since i'm the bookie, all bets are final as of when i start
NO CREDIT!!! cash up front for all bets

i'll be starting (if all goes as planned with no delays) at 13:00 system time, on saturday
make sure ot get your bets in by then. if you can't see me, send me a note with your bet (you'd better live up to the bet though, if you bet this way and lose, or i'll be very upset with you, as will alicia)

alicia has agreed to change the type 3 odds: it now pays out at 15:1 if you're right on, and 7.5:1 if you're the closest

NyteShade: Riddle Quest
Thu Jul 3 07:36:59 2003
To: hero

Ok the standing for the riddle quest are in it they are:
Fia with 3, Ghaleon with 8, Grahf with 9, Dio with 10, Snoopy with 11, Beanis with 15
kharn with 14, Nest with 15, Stars with 15note + Nest with 15, Stars with 15, Cord with 16
Disaster for 21 and Sozz for 21
Prize will be given out when I contact Faustus
---------------

These characters need to log in or will lose their characters:

Adakar, Exodyss, Harrypotter, Inkydu, Jesostele, Maya, Mccready

------------------------------------------------------

IDEAS:

Disaster: RC rooms shouldn't show up for mortal hangman, in same way hero rooms don't

Kharn: when you click on someones pic in the gallerie, it should link to those persons website (if he/she has one)

Suicide: using teleport/etc should not automaticly turn on the questwatch channel

Cataclysm: messages sent via telepathy should show up in tellh

Ankou: note/description - (number) to delete the (number) line of a description or note/description insert (number) (string) to insert a line after the (number) line of a description or note

Cord: a "alts" field for profile, where people can specify their alts if they wish. this field would then automatically be set for all the specified alts. then modify whois tho also show that player's alts.

Cord: probably would need to be a sort of alt + <player name>, alt - <player name> command combo so some checking can be performed. assure that the added alt is a character, and maybe that that char as the same password as the current character...

Cord: ha == has. then maybe modify whois <player> to show that player and/or any of their atls that are currently online... i dunno. could be quite handy

Ghaleon: Have a low level weapon accessible for newbies

[ 184] Kharn: allow damp to be longer than 18 (was it 18?) characters

Ghaleon: Mental barrier reflects bamf! *hops*

Cord: probably been mentioned before, but it'd be nice if mental barrier was able to reflect twice if both mobs/players are affected by it, thus nullifying it for both.

Cord: have the color of the 'answer' channel be set-able?

Cord: have "quest <string>" go to the quest channel instead of the question channel?
[
Cord: also, when hero, seeing the color of the hero channel in colors would be nice

Disaster: "look item character" to look at the long description of an item being worn by a character

Rabies: Add a new "blocker" mob specco that could keep you from exiting a room in the specified direction(s). Ex: "N: The black knight blocks your passage!"

Melissa: a social that makes the disaprooving 'tsk, tsk' noise

Rabies: Yet another speco for mobs: speco_regenerate. Heals a percentage of its hps per tick (say, 15%?) rather than a fixed 50.

Melissa: an 'eeeee' or 'eeeeeek' social

Melissa: a social that goes [character] 'hangs on your every word'

Melissa: social [character] 'mourns [character]'

oh yeah, lets make kenders even more powerful lol

> Ack: Also the heavier the object the better the
> success rate

Little Kender, "but honestly Polgara, why can't I use
this Ottoman (very very heavy object if you haven't
seen one) to sap the Golem."

Polgara, "Because it weighs more than you do."

Little Kender, "but..."

Polgara, "No."

Little Kender, "but..."

Polgara, "NO."

Little Kender, "I challenge you to the Arena!"

Polgara, "So you can try and knock me unconscious with
an ottoman?" *blinks*

I think this about covers my answer to this idea :)

> Ack: A fallback command, is like flee but isntead of
> going to another room you stay where you are. only
> works if YOU are the attacking person

Errr...so it does what? Keeps you in the room where
you were fighting it. So...I don't understand. It
would keep fighting you?? Is typing a single letter
(n,s,e,w) to hard nowadays :) Flee! Flee!

> Ack: when you enter the arena and you are invis then
> it should say Someone enters the arena

If an Invisible Personage falls in the Forest, do you
see them fall?

NO. That's what SEE invis potions are for :) sorry.

> Ack: make the guardian killable and give the demons
> a different guild master across from the druids. I
> want his axe!!

Guardian steps up to the computer.

"Excuse me, Polgara, let me answer this one."

"Yes, Sir!" Says Polgara, the demon chicken.

"Perhaps, if the gods allow it someday you can earn my
axe in a quest, young padawan..err...Ack. But for now,
we don't need huge spam battles that last for overly
lengthy amounts of time at recall," Guardian types as
he lovingly caresses his axe.

"They shan't get thee mine precious. No, they shant."

(errrr..yeah. did I mention that it's 3 am here?)

> Suicide: the minimum level requirement for each RC
> should be included in help fetish

Good idea. In fact, great idea. But that would also
narrow down where the RCs are, and we all know the
whereabouts are SUPPOSED to be a closely guarded
secret and not spread around. Wouldn't narrowing down
the level of the RCs make the entire quest (and it is
a quest) to easy. While I like the idea, I like the
tradition better :)

> Cord: you really should be prompted if you are sure
> when you type "remort" at level 151

OH yeah. Can you say "Polgara never MEANT to be a
demon?" I knew you could. Please, please please please
do this. haha. I wonder how many times this has been
posted now?

> Oversoul: Ballistic attack says you chuckle as a
> stone hits (MOB). It usually only taps. I think as
> you grow in level, the stone should be bigger and it
> should do more damage

It's a newbie spell. I think the only way the stone
should do more damage as you level is if it WASN'T a
newbie spell. I can't see some lvl 50 throwing a
boulder at Kandy for what?? 5 mana? what is it? hehe.
No. don't think so. :)

> Peel: get xp in the arena for killing players

heh. Interesting idea really. You CHOOSE to go into
the arena, technically (while there are ways around
this) you can't be made to go into it (unless an IMM
takes you there. the problem with this, is that it
would be an easy way to level. You don't have to get
your corpse. You don't lose anything. If you did lose
your corpse when you died in the arena, a person can
be killed again and again and again just corpse
retrieving themselves, because it would be LEGAL for
anyone to stand in that room and kill him when you
came in to get your corpse. No. I've gotten off on a
slight tangent, but you see my point? EXP in the arena
would make the playing field unlevel.

> Cord: this has probably been idea-ed before, but
> just in case... it would be nice if identify
> told you what wear slot a piece of equipment was
> for...

GOOD IDEA! Great idea! All for this! If someone would
spend the time to go through all the items and put
wear tags on them and the programming for it was done.
woohoo. :)

> Oversoul: If you're invisible and you can see
> yourself in "group" without see invis, you should be
> able to see what you typed in chath without see
> invis

Heh, another good point and something I think should
be fixed.

Our Australian friends will probably appreciate this humor:

Olympics in Oz

Here are some of the classic questions that were asked of the Sydney Olympic Committee via their website, and answers supplied where appropriate...

Q: Does it ever get windy in Australia? I have never seen it rain on TV, so how do the plants grow? (UK)
A: Upwards, out of the ground, like the person who asked this question, who themselves will need watering if their IQ drops any lower...

Q: Will I be able to see kangaroos in the street? (USA)
A: Depends on how much beer you've consumed...

Q: Which direction should I drive - Perth to Darwin or Darwin to Perth - to avoid driving with the sun in my eyes? (Germany)
A: Excellent question, considering that the Olympics are being held in Sydney.

Q: I want to walk from Perth to Sydney - can I follow the railroad tracks? (Sweden)
A: Sure, it's only three thousand miles, so you'll need to have started about a year ago to get there in time...

Q: Is it safe to run around in the bushes in Australia? (Sweden)
A: And accomplish what?

Q: It is imperative that I find the names and addresses of places to contact for a stuffed porpoise. (Italy)
A: I'm not touching this one...

Q: My client wants to take a steel pooper-scooper into Australia. Will you let her in? (South Africa)
A: Why? We DO have toilet paper here...

Q: Do the camels in Australia have one hump or two? (UK)

Q: Do you have perfume in Australia? (France)
A: No. Everybody stinks.

Q: Can I wear high heels in Australia? (UK)
A: This HAS to have been asked by a blonde...

Q:Can you tell me the regions in Tasmania where the female population is smaller than the male population? (Italy)
A: Yes. Gay nightclubs.

Q: Do you celebrate Christmas in Australia? (France)
A: Yes. At Christmas.

Q: Can I drive to the Great Barrier Reef? (Germany)
A: Sure, if your vehicle is amphibious.

Q: Are there killer bees in Australia? (Germany)
A: Not yet, but we'll see what we can do when you get here.

Q: Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Australia? (USA)
A: What's this guy smoking, and where do I get some?

Q: Are there supermarkets in Sydney and is milk available all year round?
A: Yes on the supermarkets, but the cows are on strike.

Q: Please send a list of all doctors in Australia who can dispense rattlesnake serum. (USA)
A: I love this one... there are no rattlesnakes in Australia.

Q: Which direction is North in Australia? (USA)
A: Face North and you should be about right.

Q: Can you send me the Vienna Boys' Choir schedule? (USA)
A: People have long had considerable trouble distinguishing between Austria and Australia. (Makes me so proud of being an 'merican... the land of the geographically challenged.)

Q: I have a question about a famous animal in Australia, but I forget its name. It's a kind of bear and lives in trees. (USA)

Q: Are there places in Australia where you can make love outdoors? (Italy)
A: Yes. Outdoors

Q: I want to go swimming at Bondi Beach on October 20th. Will I turn blue? (Germany)
A: No that would only happen on the 21st.

Q: I hear that all Australian women are beautiful. Is that true and if so, can you send me pictures of the available ones? (Italy)
A: Sure. Have you got about 3000GB spare on your harddrive?

Q: Will I be able to speek English most places I go? (USA)
A: Yes, but you'll have to learn it first.

Suicide: using teleport/etc should not automaticly turn on the questwatch channel
*shrugs* According to the 'help questwatch' it says that it is just the same way as on how the other channels are written. Never really bothered me...
Cataclysm: messages sent via telepathy should show up in tellh
It would be great! But I think it would change the whole thing--changing the spell to a channel-type thing.
Ankou: note/description - (number) to delete the (number) line of a description or note/description insert (number) (string) to insert a line after the (number) line of a description or note
Agreed.
Cord: a "alts" field for profile, where people can specify their alts if they wish. this field would then automatically be set for all the specified alts. then modify whois tho also show that player's alts.

Cord: ha == has. then maybe modify whois <player> to show that player and/or any of their atls that are currently online... i dunno. could be quite handy
Make character accounts, in other words. *nod self*
Kharn: allow damp to be longer than 18 (was it 18?) characters
I don't see why not. I mean the message for a discbobulate is far longer than our current damp message can handle. ^,^
Ghaleon: Mental barrier reflects bamf! *hops*
*does the chicken dance*
Cord: probably been mentioned before, but it'd be nice if mental barrier was able to reflect twice if both mobs/players are affected by it, thus nullifying it for both.
*imagines an eternity-long fight between two demons with MB head...*
Cord: also, when hero, seeing the color of the hero channel in colors would be nice
Try "color hero <youridealcolor>" -- seems to work for me.
Disaster: "look item character" to look at the long description of an item being worn by a character
You really hate giving me items just for 10 seconds, don't you?

Disaster: RC rooms shouldn't show up for mortal hangman, in same way hero rooms don't
-i idea'd this when i still thought that only mortal rooms showed up at hangman. now that i know that isn't the case, just take out the "in the same way hero rooms don't" part

Kharn: when you click on someones pic in the gallerie, it should link to those persons website (if he/she has one)
-that would be a good idea. also, now that i think of it, it should be possible to see the photos of players with a picture on the BR pages from within the forums (we already can get email, webpage, information, etc, why not photos too)

Ghaleon: Have a low level weapon accessible for newbies
-you mean like the dozens of them that there already are? i would say that there should be a newbie dagger on one of hte trainees maybe, in case a newbie loses a corpse, but that VERY rarely happens anyways, and if they're in that desperate need, they can just start a garbage character, rem all, drop all, and be ready to go again with their real character.

[ 184] Kharn: allow damp to be longer than 18 (was it 18?) characters
-allow bigger damps, maybe (eventually, it just gets rediculously spammy) allow more damps, definately.

Ghaleon: Mental barrier reflects bamf! *hops*
-mb shouldn't reflect any type of spell, only physical attacks (and mind thrust, which might not be considered a physical attack, but behaves like one)

Cord: probably been mentioned before, but it'd be nice if mental barrier was able to reflect twice if both mobs/players are affected by it, thus nullifying it for both.
-naw, i think i like it better as it is. if you want it nullified for both, juts don't have either of you use it

Cord: have the color of the 'answer' channel be set-able?
-good idea. i hate how answer and question always have ot be the same colour

Cord: have "quest <string>" go to the quest channel instead of the question channel?
-useless for those who know what they're doing, since @ is so much easier to type, but VERY good for newbies

Cord: also, when hero, seeing the color of the hero channel in colors would be nice
-i'm a fan of seeing many more channels customizible for colour, and i'd say hero not showing up is more of a bug than an idea anyways

Disaster: "look item character" to look at the long description of an item being worn by a character

Rabies: Add a new "blocker" mob specco that could keep you from exiting a room in the specified direction(s). Ex: "N: The black knight blocks your passage!"
-good idea, i'd love to see that. would they just block you, or fight you automaticly? would you still be able to flee that direction, since you're running away and could slip past them?

Rabies: Yet another speco for mobs: speco_regenerate. Heals a percentage of its hps per tick (say, 15%?) rather than a fixed 50.
-lets make it more versatile, speco_regenerate_# for the writer's choice of %. (by the way, what exactly IS the current system?)

That's near what I meant. This is after getting a tell from a newbie who died and doesn't know where his corpse is (and also needs to leave) then after a day, he's asking me where to get newbie weapons.

Pol: GOOD IDEA! Great idea! All for this! If someone would

woohoo.
I could be wrong, but I believe those tags are necessary and thus already there for all items. All that would need to be changed would be the identify code.

Pol: If an Invisible Personage falls in the Forest, do you
see them fall? NO. That's what SEE invis potions are for. Sorry.
I had assumed Ack mean that the player watching the battle channel _didn't_ currently have see invis. So me and Rabies tested this out. If you don't have see invis as a mort, and someone with "invis" affecting them enters the arena, you apprently don't get _any_ battle message displayed to you. However, it _does_ show up under battleh. Rather curious, I thought.
Cord: also, when hero, seeing the color of the hero channel in colors would be nice
Anakin: Try "color hero <youridealcolor>" -- seems to work for me.
Sure it does. But now type colors. It isn't listed there. (Yes, it's a small thing, but I just thought I'd throw it out there.)
Rabies: Add a new "blocker" mob specco that could keep you from exiting a room in the specified direction(s). Ex: "N: The black knight blocks your passage!"
My vote of support is hereby added. ;-)

Either sound like worthwhile additions.

best bet in order to be added is either a note or an email. it's hard to keep track of requests that come in 14 different ways ;)

That's correct. Wear bits are incorporated into the area files, and thus already exist for every item currently in existence. (It's how the mud determines what slot a given item can be worn in... it's just a matter then of showing that data to the player.) I don't know if identify really should show that (you can generally compare the item to find out where it goes, after all), but I'm not really adverse to the idea.

I like the idea simply because when I pick up a pair of pants IRL I know where it goes. I am not suggesting that when we pick up an item it tells us the wear bit, but I think at least it should show it in an identify.

Pants are ideally used <on head>. *nod self*

Personnally I agree with Coma here. You don't need magic to be able to tell that the girdle of immense godly power should be holding up your pants.

I humbly suggest that if this is going anywhere, we point out what slots an item may be placed on in response to examining the object, not to identifying the object.

"A pair of sky blue boxers lie here, hastily discarded.
Boxers may be worn about waist.
Boxers may be worn on head.
Boxers may be held."

Silliness aside, you get the idea.

I like the idea of some eq fitting on multiple slots. We can type "wear boxers head" and such.

Equipment may fit on multiple slots, unless the builder is lying to me; if it is, can I be told now?

It's lying to you. Theoretically, you can put as many wear bits as you'd like on an object, and the object can then go into any of those slots assigned to it. Realistically, the MUD only accepts two wear bits on any object (one of them being the take bit, 1). After that, whatever slot bits you include, the MUD will only recognize the first among them. So something listed with wear bits of 1|2|32 (wearable on finger & head, with the take bit) is only wearable on your finger.

That...is a really nice thing to know.

I'll need to rework some stuff.

If you only want it to be worn differently on the mob, though, that's a different trick. You can load eq onto a mob (via resets) in whatever slot you'd like, regardless of what wear bits the object has.
