Welcome to the Barren Realms MUD Newsletter. Barren Realms can be reached at: telnet://barren.coredcs.com:8000

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of our beloved immortal, Tom. He died in a car accident in April. He was a young man with a bright, joyful spirit and a bright future. He loved BR and its players, this was his second home. I will be accepting any emails with your feelings and memories about Tom to include on the BR website around his picture, which will be commemorating him. Our deepest sympathy to Yoshinori, as well, and we thank her for letting us know.

Please remember folks, you are loved - we are a family. Please take care of yourselves. We don't want to mourn another loss.

Quests Running:

Disaster: a VERY large, and so far a very VAGUE quest

Hey everyone, dis here :) this note is a little bit different from the last few quest notes i've posted
starting sometime in september, i will be holding a VERY large quest, which will run most likely over the course of several months
i won't be posting many details yet, since there are currently already two very large quests happening: tgames2 and outcasts
what i DO want you to do though, is to:
1)let me know if you think you'll be interested, so i can begin some more detailed planning and hopefully get started as soon as practicable
2)let me know what times and days you would be able to participate
i think it's rather obvious that a weekend time will be best for most people, but please let me know if friday night/saturday sometime/sunday sometime (mud time) is best so i can accomodate as many as possible
being on at that certain time every week will not be absolutely essential to the quest, but it will be VERY beneficial to your effort to win
the most practical way for me to respond to any questions you may have will be through the forums, so please post relavent questions there, not in notes (and for now, please expect most questions not to be answered, until the date gets closer)
oh, and in case i wasn't clear, please let me know 1)what times are best 2)what times are managable 3)what times are completely impossible
-Disaster

Disaster: another crypto quest

i hope you guys enjoyed the last one :) got another variation for
you guys to try this time it's a polyalphabetic caesar cipher, using
somewhere between 2 and 7 alphabets that means there are X different
ciphers used in repeating sequence, each one "sliding" the letters a
certain number of places up the alphabet (looping around, of course)
NHNZI YQBTZ HVING MMCCL JHSZJ URCWY NVJGT AYZHZ
XNKMF PDKFF ZBMUQ ISXEQ SXKMC CDENN GQSNG MYIWT
ZRWQU BMYBD VUURA YMQWZ AGKFF ZBMUQ ILUHV FHCNN
HCBMY KINLN NYBDT NWGBM LNCLB SGJAM WRYUQ QFZOJ UMLQI
NSFNS PJMDK WYSAM YOZTN DKYMM MCNVI SXDZT OSKFF ZBMUQ ABYRB
LUSMN HRMFL BPTZS PJMGI IIVOW IUMFH CBMYV
GAYQU XNNEJ LTVYC KXTOE HSXSP JUKBF LNNPH ZZ
thanks much to amy for sponsoring, and good luck to you all (please post a note when you get it, so everyone knows)
-dis

on teh second line, last column, what is written as "MYIWT" should actually have been "MYIVVT"
really sorry about that, as well as for the first correction i posted which itself had a typo in it *bonk self*
note to self: no more cipher posts after midnight

Quests Ran:

Redeemer: <Drunken Horseracing quest!>

In honor of the movie "Seabinscuit", I ran a drunken horseracing quest.
Trinsic, Envy, Sleepless and Pteppic were the participating jockeys.
Each participant was givne his or her own race horse (or mule or turtle)
and raced in three races. First from the colossal tree trunk to the west
gates of Malacandra. Then from the west gates to Gargamel's castle in Smurfland.
Finally from Gargamel's castle tback to the colossal tree trunk.
The overall winner was Sleepless, followed by Envy, then Trinsic, with Pteppic fourth.
Each participant was allowed to keep his or her own animals after the quest.
Thanks to Leiland for sponsoring the quest and making such gorgeous and unique horses.

ideas:
Ghaleon: "help linkdead" to tell people linkdead characters is considered playing "on" BR.

Cacophony: i think that the level of white lotus temple should be changed from 1-50 to 1-(level of buddha) (to allow another high level summoning spot)

Pau: maybe have a command on how to see the level of your limbs as a demon

Luc: Dex should affect hit roll, id say dex would be more approriate for that then strength.

Ghaleon: a spell/skill which raises your prime attribute

Macros: crack knuckles social

Ghaleon: A random dice command (something like yell, only for area). It could be made for a quest like one in Candyland

Squiddy: avatar spells shouldn't have the mana cost as new spells

AMystery: the messages that occur when someone dies and loses a body part could stand some variety. perhaps have the victor rip out the heart, or twist off an arm

------------
These characters must be logged in within the month or will be deleted:

Ailia, Alias, Andra, Aralifas, Audax, Bonebreaker, Collen, Cressida, Ecstacy, Genevia, Grummel, Kaeleigh, Lieder, Ryu, Saeryn, Sebring, Silvermage, Wells

Responses by Anakin:

Cacophony: implement lose all, similar to group all
> Good idea, though I don't much group anymore, got tired leveling.

Cacophony: a way to recall with your vehicle (at a cost of 75%? 90%?) mv
> This can be a nice idea, we have a Nissan Maxima in Keep of Mahn-Tor, I'd like to take it home. icon_biggrin.gif

Puppetmon: I think High Level Druids alts are being used as mana batteries, why not just remove energy transfer skills?
> Something's wrong with you. You need to go yank all your teeth off and repost this.

Sozz: Timestamps on chath and heroh...and questh

AMystery: how about a time stamp a few channels, especially info and whatever newbies show on for heroes
> Timestamps on all channels would be a good thing too. icon_smile.gif

Ghaleon: beeph would be really helpful *g*
> You're a genius. <3

Puppetmon: what about an enflame armor spell? to be used on armor with a magic flag
> Help 'Enflame Weapon'
'ENFLAME WEAPON'
Flaming items enhance the user's ability to do damage with offensive spells.
This spell will attach an enflamed tip to any weapon that already carries a
magical aura. The effect of flaming items is cumulative.

I think this elf knows that their damage increases with flaming items, not only weapons. So why not?

Puppetmon: Put an Asterix "*" next to OOG skills when you type slist
> Good idea. It's make things easier, I guess. *shrugs*

Puppetmon: Add a help file for Save vs Spell, it could save alot of time for people who arent aware of what it is

Puppetmon: Spell or idea that gets rid of mobs flying flag, besides dispel magic

Procrastinator's Creed

1. I believe that if anything is worth doing, it would have been done already.

2. I shall never move quickly, except to avoid more work or find excuses.

3. I will never put off until tomorrow, what I can forget about forever.

4. I shall meet all of my deadlines directly in proportion to the amount of bodily injury I could expect to receive from missing them.

5. I firmly believe that tomorrow holds the possibility for new technologies, astounding discoveries, and a reprieve from my obligations.

6. I truly believe that all deadlines are unreasonable regardless of the amount of time given.

7. I shall never forget that the probability of a miracle, though infinitesmally small, is not exactly zero.

8. If at first I don't succeed, there is always next year.

9. I shall always decide not to decide, unless of course I decide to change my mind.

10. I shall always begin, start, initiate, take the first step, and/or write the first word, when I get around to it.

11. I obey the law of inverse excuses which demands that the greater the task to be done, the more insignificant the work that must be done prior to beginning the greater task.

12. I know that the work cycle is not plan/start/finish, but is wait/plan/plan.

13. I will never rush into a job without a lifetime of consideration.
