Subject: Newsletter dec 5
Hi folks. Welcome to another installation of BR's Newsletter. Some of you
have been good about this, but I need more people commenting on ideas
expressed in here, expand, critique, criticise, and compliment. Go for it!
@>--------------------------(ideas)------------------------------------
Corn: bow and arrows and crossbolts
Berry: how about when you try to recall from a no recall room it
says something different like 'This land is cursed' so you can distingush
no recall from a curse spell(even though you could just type aff :)
Dorkus: It might be nice to have some better leather equipment
for some of the mid-range players.... I have only seen low level stuff there.
Mandwe: make a curse channel...
Mandwe: make it so when you puke, you can eat more :)
Mandwe: make it sop when it rains, mud collects on the ground..
MUD FIGHT!
Corn: A chalkboard that records the people with the most kills, etc...
Mandwe: then when you are in the same ropom as someone and you
are it you can type tag 'person' and it switches the it flag
Berry: mob parts have the perosn who killed 'ems name on them
(maybe just big mobs like xor *grin*)
Berry: a chess game
Criterion: how about a command for like closing our eyes without
sleeping, so we can still hear says, and tells, it'll just say that
someone is talking to us... that way we can also avoid spams by closing
our eyes, we can only hear...
Mandwe: make dreams happpen depending on what is going on around you
Mandwe: and also make a 'cast dream' spell whre you ddetermine
someones dreams
Mandwe: swear social
Mandwe: make it so you can pout liquid out of a container
Deuces: make the mobs in shadow grove not wander. They keep
wandering into high tower of sorcery, making shadow grove impossible
Lasher: How about a new bunch of helps, where you type 'help '
and it tells you the area range intended for the level. Would make it SO
much easier than having to search through lists...
Corn: Elf or illithid spell... Time warp... Changes time on mud like Control weather.
Cutlass: 'invincible' flag for some shopkeepers.
Zeebo: why dont you make help screens for "hp" "m" and "mv" to explain
hit points, mana and movement to new players who dont know what that abbreviation is.. :)
@>-------------------------(name quest)-----------------------------------
This is a rather long drawn out story...
I thought the mud was easy and made
Simple to prove it by heroing in 10 days. End of Story :}
Simple
why am I named Shriek ? heh thats easy.
I was minding my own buisiness playin my Hero char one day
when all the sudden my server kicked me off so hard my Hero
got stuck in the game - couldnt even be kicked off - -
this was before he was a Hero btw - anyway I got so frustrated
I was ready to scream - and being so addicted to the mud
I couldnt not play Shriek was born - so no it doesnt have
anything to do with the Avian skill at all
thanks Shriek
the reason i call myself forent is because of the business
my new wife and i just bought.
the business is a rooming house hence the name for rent or forent!
My name Greydeath was a famous clan/legion in the famous RPG
Battletech, also a novel series.. I chose it because it is the way I
am...and it is also the clan/legion that my group always uses when we
play Battletech. For those of you who don't know what Battletech is, it is a=
=20
game where 50+ foot robots go around blowing each other up..it's not much
unlike BR..except that it uses range weapons...and no I do not
believe that there is a MUD involving Battletech, or it's close=7F
relative Robotech...>:)...
Greydeath, your friendly killer and MASTER of BerryBall...>:)..
@>----------------------------------(suggestions)--------------------
I didn't get any feedback on my spell suggestions so I was curious if
they were bad, good, or just plain Ugly..:) Thanks...They were again
"Barbarian" +10 dam +10 no AC adding. Higher level Druids something to
replace Berzerk with at a high level. Last for 12 hours 75 mana points
"Quickness" +2 dex and natural AC. Mid-level druids to help with the
many autoassisted attack on druids by mobs last for 12 hours 50 mana
points
Allow the poison spell *which doesn't do a whole lot of damage in my
exp* by casted upon wielded weapon like a taint but not *as* powerful.
Name Quest- Well I am Lady Wolf or Lady Wolfgang reason being for my
name is that I love Wolves and Mozart so I combined the two. I used to
go just by Wolfgang but in my small little town on BBSes (I used to
frequent Red Dragon) the other SysOps thought I was wierd cuz I'd play
Male characters so I changed my name to Lady and started playing Females
to shut them up..:P I am also in need of some critics to view may page
at http://www.nwi.net/~ladywolf/ Constructive criticism wanted not just
plain old obnoxious comments..:P Thanks
Hi Kiri,
well I thought I'd add my 2 cents on about the places for armor to be worn
>head....Face....around neckx2(possibly only one because of the added face
armor)...on body...about body
>on arms...on hands....on fingers(why only 2...there are ten fingers...rings
for certain fingers would make things interesting)..around waist....onlower
body(instead of on legs, like pants and then wear armor on legs over the
pants)...legs as just mentioned....on feet....0000000 and one last thought
Ear Rings????
just a thought..

I was lucky enough to be born to a navy family on January 3, 1976 in
honolulu Hawaii, thus making me a Military Brat...oooo fun. Well I spent
the next 13 years moving from place to place, including Florida,
Connecticut, California, and back to hawaii. Well, lets just say it was
fun... At age 14 though everything changed, We moved to Naples Italy. It
was a dream come true. I got the chance to grow up in Europe. I spent 4
years there and traveled across Europe, Russia, and Some of Africa and Mid
East. Lets just say that I got more education in those four years than I
ever gotten to this date. I loved Italy especially...you see I am full
blooded Italian so I fit right in. Well, after living ther for four years I
was forced to once again to move....Well for once I got fed up...my parents
literally had to drug me to get me on the airplane back to the states. We
moved to Washington DC, there I graduated from Lake Braddock
Highschool...13th in a class of 600...cool huh... Well now we get to my
present life. I started college at Randolph Macon and again my parents
moved...but I didnt go with...thank god.... I love my college, it was here
I met the most important person in my life...yes I mean Cherye... my heroine
counterpart on Barren. We started out as friends but one night we were
sitting around with some friends drinking and playing truth or dare...stupid
I know, but it was fun....Well one thing led to another and then one of
Cherye's friends decided to enlighten me as to Cherye's feelings towards
me...boy did she turn Red...the girl can blush so bright it out does the sun...
I was surprised to say the least and wasnt sure what to do...I almost lost
her in those first few weeks...it finally took her friend (again) to point
out that if I didn't get my act together Cherye was leaving...period end of
story...needless to say I got it together quick...the rest is history...
I found Barren about a year ago..yes it took me forever to Hero but is was
worth it.
Me and cherye having been playing it ever since....Well lets see...what else
to say...ok future plans..
Cherye and I are planning on moving in together this summer...she is gonna
graduate..and I have one year left...it should be great...I can't wait...
Well thats all for now...
Jett Do'Urden, Drow Ranger, Cherye's Warder and
Champion, M'Hael, Hero...
aka Ironfist, Florin, and one that will remain
nameless...(*KIRI KNOWS*)

@>---------------------(new race)---------------------------------
Okay this might sound a bit hokie but I got it off one of my games and
modifed it a little bit.
There in the Great Eastern Desert lies a citization that no one has even
seen. The Khajii have been settled there for many years and now are just
being recongized. Desended from the great cats of the desert, they
Khajii are dexterous, intelligent, and hardy people. Some choose to
decorate their faces in the style of their feline ancestors. In time
they have created their own unique class classed the Nightblade. With
all the weary travelers going through the desert daily with their purses

they have perfect many illusion spells as well using mirages in combat.
Thus the Nightblade came about a new kind of thief-mage.

@>-----------------------------(hero bio)--------------------------------
This is my bio
My name is Ben Berry. On Barren realms I play Berry. As you can
see my lame choice of a character name is based on my last name because
the names I wanted were taken. I was born in Hawaii and lived there
until I was 13. Now I live in Arizona and am a Sophmore at Coronado High
School. I love using computers and since I was in the second grade I've
wanted to be a computer programmer. I enjoy playing basketball and
football though I don't play much anymore. My favorit football team is
the Buffalo Bills it was so sad watching them lose four superbowls. I
have a brother who lives in Hong Kong and a sister who goes to school at
ASU. I hope to go to Cal tech. for college if I can get a scholarship.

Mahamne: something to keep me busy while we regen mana/hp while sleeping :)
Lysta: When someone sleeping is talk to (usign tell) he receives the
message in a dream: XXX appears in your dreams telling you: ...
but must still wake up to reply
Vulcron: would it be possible to arrange the armor placings in a logical
order, eg head, neck, body, arms, hands, fingers, waist, legs, feet
Amish: A scoot spell that encourages mobs to wander elswhere... Druid perhaps
Olf: How 'bout a place to lvl. called 'Area 51'? I will have aliens and
freak scientists as mobs? (2 cents please.) :>
Ghandi: I Think dwarves should have a skill like teleport/astral/suimmon/ or track...
Hardishane: invis should be available for druids out of guild at level 15
Hardishane: since cr's are a privelige (spelling?) and not a right I
think pass door should be available at much lower levels... ie elves at
10 and all others in the level 12 range -but- still out of guild.
CuR: how about making it possible to be creative and put digits in one's
name other than letters; like one could have a name like "--==**>>??!
Zeebo: How about forbiding the healer (Clericus) from casting change sex spells.. :)
Mandwe: hmm, maybe make a rdrain mana spell- steal others mana
Foxy: why don't you alter the names of some of the socials that have now become skills?
like give and glae, for instance...
Deuces: hmmm after newbie quest, got to thinking, how about some more practice mobs for
the newbies, supply gets scarces with lots of newbies
@>----------------------------(Name quest)---------------------------------
Well, here is how I got my MUD name.
I was in the college computer lab trying to figure out a name
because I was going to log on to Realms of Despair MUD -- will never play=20
that MUD again.Too many people on it. Anyway, I tried scott and also edward=
but both of those names were taken. So, another MUD player who was sitting=
next to me, suggested I try "descot" and it worked! So from then on, I have=
used the name "descot." The reason I tried "edward" and "scott" is because=
my name in Real life is Ed Scott, so descot, is my first name spelled=20
backwards connectedeto my last name without the extra "t"
Just thought y'all would like to know, Descot.
Shylock: Name
My grandmother was an English teacher.
Blame her for the stuff I had to read as a child. :)
The reason that I chose Thunderbolt was:
1) It is the type of aircraft that I like the best!
2) There was a thunder storm moving in the day that I started in BARREN=
REALMS!
3) Bear was already taken. (My favorite animal).
THUNDERBOLT
Hello all. This is how I picked the name for my character.
The name came from a series of books called the river of the dancing gods.
In one of the books, the heroes come across a village being terrorizied by a=
dragon. This particular dragon's name was Vercertorix, and he had some=20
problems. He was absolutely terrified of virgins, which the villagers=20
insisted on sacrificing to him. His therapist was trying to work this trait=
out of him, and failing miserably. Vercertorix was also very young, and=20
terrified of almost everything, and just wished to be left alone. I liked=20
the name, and though this particular portion was really hilarious. I also=20
thought the name was cool, so took it as my own. I have no traits in common=
with him, just for those of you who are wondering. I just liked the name and=
how it sounded. I have used it on every MUD I am on, so if you ever see=20
another it is me. This is my contribution to Becca's name quest, and I hope=
you have enjoyed it.
Keep on MUDing and having fun in the process :)
Vercertorix
I got mine from video shooting games... I CAN'T HIT THE BROADSIDE
OF A BARN!!! No, it has NOTHING to do with insanity. Thank you.

@>--------------------------(suggestions)---------------------------------
Jello:
a few newsletters ago, you mentioned something about completely reworking
illithids to use PGPs (or something like that) instead of mana... why not
do the same thing with dwarves, too? they could have a revised set of
skills based on, say, reserved strength points, rather than mana (since i
wouldn't know a mana if i tripped over it anyway...). these would primarily
be added-damage attacks rather than things like fireball, (Blow-To-Face,
Maim, Impale (requires a piercing weapon- you ram the weapon right through
your opponent, possibly killing them outright, but losing your weapon),
etc etc,) and could include
a bash door ability... reserved strength could be run similar to mana, where
it is regained by sleeping (but without drunkenness assisting, i would think),
or could perhaps be based on something else- consumption of special items,
periods of meditation; could have movements affect it as well (fatigue) etc etc
etc... lots of possibilities.
other things- okay, we have vehicles. cool. now, when one thinks of cars,
what do you think of? humans- we made 'em. so why not give humans a special
ability or two connected to vehicles? a ram skill, for example... you hop
in your ride, and you plow into that bloody mob... teach his butt a lesson...
Jello.
Ladywolf:
More suggestions from me again...Okay if you want to solve the problem
of people selling donated items here's an idea. As soon as someone
donates an item make a "donated" flag and it adds automatically when
something is donated. Then well someone tries to sell it at the armourer
or weaponsmith he/she/it can't cuz it has a donated flag on it..:)
Allow practices to be used as Enhancements. a more than fair ratio would
be 5 practices equal 1 enhancement. I've been doing a lot of MUD jumping
around and get a lot of ideas on stuff..:P I even got another
Implementor visit BR...:)
This is a response to the remort idea that someone brought up in an earlier
newsletter. I like the idea, as I have seen it on another MUD, and it works
quite well. When someone would remort, to the same or even a different race,
it would bring them down to level 2 (save-able level heheh), and they would
lose all previous skills/eq/inv/cash, but would give them, as a bonus, an
extra 10hit/dam and all stats would start at 16. I thought this was a great
addition, and would recommend something similar to this to be introduced on
BR. (Heh the 10hit/dam would be nice, but considering most mortals don't go
over 100, perhaps that should be reduced :) )

@>------------------(comments on past newsletters)------------------------
Mandwe: make a curse channel...
Jello: hehe... i don't see it happening, but it appeals to me
Ladywolf:
I didn't get any feedback on my spell suggestions so I was curious if
they were bad, good, or just plain Ugly..:) Thanks...They were again
"Barbarian" +10 dam +10 no AC adding. Higher level Druids something to
replace Berzerk with at a high level. Last for 12 hours 75 mana points
Jello: hee hee hee, ho ho ho, ha ha ha, hee hee hee... shore, shore shore.
Ralph:
Barbarian is a cool idea, but i think instead of the quickness spell (which i don't
think would help), make a blink spell which would teleport the druid (or elf
whichever) to a nearby room. Advantages, another way to get out of a bad combat.
Disadvantages, I am sure there are other rooms in the area that have worse mobs than
the one you are fighting... :)
and take out the word of recall spell... Or even beter, allow this to recall you to
different temples, or the city past olympus that are far from calathar...
Ironfist:
well I thought I'd add my 2 cents on about the places for armor to be worn
>head....Face....around neckx2(possibly only one because of the added face
armor)....on body...about body
Jello:i could see maybe removing one neck and replacing it with a face
slot, but i guess it would depend on how difficult it is to do...
Ironfist:
>on arms...on hands....on fingers(why only 2...there are ten fingers...rings
for certain fingers would make things interesting)..around waist....onlower
body(instead of on legs, like pants and then wear armor on legs over the
pants)...legs as just mentioned....on feet....0000000 and one last thought
Ear Rings????
Jello: why stop with the ears? lotsa body parts to pass jewelry thru...
> Corn: bow and arrows and crossbolts
Crymson: i put in an idea about this a while back.. no response on it tho :(
ralph:
YES!!! Please! Perhaps making their use something like throw for the kender but in
guild for maybe elves, humans, and kender.
> Berry: how about when you try to recall from a no recall room it
> says something different like 'This land is cursed' so you can distingush
> no recall from a curse spell(even though you could just type aff :)
Crymson:
i think just saying "you are cursed" is enough.. it adds to the realism..
plus. all you have to do is type 'affect' to see if you're affected by a
curse spell.. and if not. it's obvious that it's a cursed room.
Jello:
i like this idea... i see this 'You are cursed!' thing confusing a lot of
lowbies...
> Mandwe: make it so when you puke, you can eat more :)
crymson: sick and disguisting.. but he's got a point :P
> Criterion: how about a command for like closing our eyes without
> sleeping, so we can still hear says, and tells, it'll just say that
> someone is talking to us... that way we can also avoid spams by closing
> our eyes, we can only hear...
crymson:
sounds like 'rest' to me... but how are you going to determine which is
spam and what's not?
> Mandwe: swear social
crymson: write it.. help writesocial will get you started :)
ralph: try typing 'curse' sometime... :)
> Mandwe: make it so you can pout liquid out of a container
crymson: pour? this sounds pretty good cuz you always run into the risk of
when you empty something it disappears.
> Lasher: How about a new bunch of helps, where you type 'help '
> and it tells you the area range intended for the level. Would make it SO
> much easier than having to search through lists...
crymson:
i'm adding something like this to the BR page.. you'l be able to click on
the area name and it'll give you the description (written by Gorzak) of
each area...
ralph:
Also maybe a hint as to where the area is such as 'someone was seen
traveling east from calathar on his way to ' or something. Some of these areas are in wierd
places where people of the target levels might not frequent.
Jello: that's a lot of help files! it doesn't take _that_ long to go thru
the area list...
Ladywolf's race thing :
> Let me know if you like it or think it sucks..:P
cryms:
well. it sucks.. just kidding!!!! ;P actually, i really like this.. as i
do many of the other race submissions... this reminds me a bit of the
characters in D&D.. a Rashaka or something like that (i don't have my
Monster Manuals handy so i can't double check :P) they're cat-like
humanoids that fit very similar to the above description. they're very
loyal and have a royal stature, kinda like a superiority complex. with a
bit more thought process on the full structure of the race (what's here is
excellent :) ) i could see this possibly working as another race for BR
(IMO).. the only thing i have to argue about is that why not armor for the
legs? i understand the tail could be in the way, but couldn't they drill a
hole for their tail to fit through? ;) i think they could come up with
some adaption to be able to wear leg armor...
Ralph:
I like! I like! My only sugestion would be that the claws and such be scaled with
level...as well as some others... The reasoning being that begining PCs are not quite
mature yet... Perhaps gaining some of these things at higher levels... I still think
the vampires could work too though... :)
My additions...
Alignment: Make alignment mean something. I would think that some of these ultra good
mobs (especially priests and such) would have a problem with very evil chars running
around their temmple.
This has been sugested before, but is there any way that we could put some more role
playing elements in. i.e. non killing ways of getting xps.
> Mandwe: make it sop when it rains, mud collects on the ground..
> MUD FIGHT!
Ralph: This would be fun, a zero damage throwing weapon! hehehe!
> Corn: A chalkboard that records the people with the most kills, etc...
ralph: by level or something like that so that they mean something
(otherwise only the heroes and high levels would be on it...
> Berry: mob parts have the perosn who killed 'ems name on them
> (maybe just big mobs like xor *grin*)
ralph: Maybe instead of this, which would get kinda spammy I think...,
somebody could code a taxidermist which would stuff body parts of mobs
with something like arm of xor killed by Berry at level 12 or whatever.
Making them unedible and very light would be nice too.
> Criterion: how about a command for like closing our eyes without
> sleeping, so we can still hear says, and tells, it'll just say that
> someone is talking to us... that way we can also avoid spams by closing
> our eyes, we can only hear...
ralph: If you don't like the spam turn off the channels... :)
> Cutlass: 'invincible' flag for some shopkeepers.
ralph: Even better, a 'get out of this store!' command for Aod... That man
is anoying.

My real name is Jaakko Saari, I live in Finland , Oulu
My birthday is in december, and I am now 14 years.
I have played muds from last winter... Barren Realms, Dragon swords, and
so... DIKU muds all
I think my best Barren Realms memory was the moment, when I raised to
Hero first time. And second is probably when I hit my first
DISCOMBOBULATE.
I have now maked my area almost finish, I just need to ask the vnums
from you.. but I will ask them when you are on. The area has 104 rooms and
about 35 mobs... + some objects... I must check the numbers first. And i
think I will talk you maybe in weekend.
Here is some information, and you can ask more... if you want.

Well here goes,
My chars in BR are Greydeath and Tetsuo, I use GD more than Tet though
I was born in Orlando, FL on July 31st, 1981, so that puts me at about
15. My real name is Jerry, I'm about 6'2-6'3, about 215lbs, I like
football, and I'm good at playing football, though I haven't tried out
for high school football...I am a sophomore at Lake Brantley High
School, though most of you have never heard of it, I like it, it's a
nice school...I am in our 270 or so piece marching band, I play the best
instrument of them all, the tuba...>:)...I learned of BR from Drakar,
who is a pretty good friend of mine on the bbs I am on, I started about
the beginning of the summer, and it took me until about the middle of
autumn to actually hero GD, but it was fun, I made a lot of friends on
here though...Now I just spend my time on there harrasing my friends and
stuff like that...in my spare time while not in BR I usually am out w/
my friends, playing games, or programming something...and/or listening
to CDs or watching movies...by the way >:) is MY grin...it is like one
of those evil aligned but friendly grins...you can reach my web page at
http://geocities.com/Area51/Vault/1465, it is under some heavy work so
it doesn't look like all that much, but I'm getting around to it...
Oh well I'm sure I've bored you enough and you're probably about to be
automatically logged off for being inactive or something but hey, it's
GD and I'm special...>:)

Foxy: how about selling a lcking tent or a lock for a tent? I had an
aggro open my tent and kill me a while back! :(
Foxy: how about underwater pets?
Deuces: if you use a charmed mob to attack another mob, and that mob turns
and attacks you, you should fight back
Criterion: maybe the profile command should say the last time that
character connected...
Deuces: Here's a fun idea: Magic mirrors, you give one to your
pet, keep one, and it allows you to give them long distance commands ;>
CuR: how about a code that allows us to take one bite out of a piece of
food, and save the rest for later?
Xyganthos: it would be safer if one would need to type his/her password
to delete Sometimes I fear to go AFK because someone else in the
Computerrroom could delete me!
Berry: a spell that makes a temporary container for items that follows
them and floats (for those of you who have played d&d it would be liek
the floating disc spell)
Berry: make dwarves be able to tunnel under the ground possibly providing
a suprise attack
Berry: a skill for druids to go into a deep sleep and regen faster
(perhaps just regen hp faster)
Berry: a skill for humans to make projectiles and a better throw skill
for them (i.e. ninja stars)
Berry: a duck skill for kender thats works like another dodge
Berry: a confusion like spell/skill for ills that makes mobs become
aggresive to other mobiles
Berry: a skill for avians to fly up really high and see who/what is in
the surronding rooms
Berry: give tp/astral/summon/track ranges that increase as levels do
Berry: how about special teleportation device in towns that you can pay
to teleport to other towns
Berry: be able to set your pets attitude i.e. aggresive-it attacks
mobs,normal-how they are now,bodyguard-moves to defend you, tries to
rescue you
Berry: be able to get one half the number of attacks you would get with
your off hand weapon with your shield
Deuces: How about a ring of regeneration? It'd be a tough item to get,
but would significantly boost rate of healing.
Icy: How about a motd command to see the message of the day. I tend to
scan it, in haste, and then relogin to read it.
Kiri: we have this, type help motd
CuR: how about when you have a purse, and you put coins in on different
occasions, it consolidadets the total amount and when you look in it
tells you that?
Testy: How about bags in the general store?
Foxy: How about a command that would put all gold in your inventory in
the specified container?
Deuces: a quest flag on players who are question so they are easily
identified by all
Linkless: since there is message if you kill stuff lower level then you
There
sould be messages if you kill something is is a "laughs at you mercilly(sp?)" and higher.,., something
like Nice go
ZombyWoof: I like the idea of vehicle attacks, also maybe some other
things can be implemented like the vehicle giving you protection (raise
ac?) but the thing that keeps me from using one is I can't recall with it :(
Criterion: two spells for kenders in the form of "sphere of silence" and
"shadow light" which will allow them to use their special skills of sneak
and hide, but what should skills like that cost? Hit points and mana?
Because maybe it is the form of a sacrifice The skills may take hit
points and mana because it requires their blood, that they hold a
cermonial dagger, and mana because they have to pray to their deity to
cast it. =)
Foxy: How about in the identify spell it tells you what part of your body
a piece of armor is worn on?
Shan: this is the second time it's happened - i lose my internet
connection while playing and then try to relogon after regaining
connection. It says I'm already playing. If i typed the right password i
should be able to get my player back
Slaytanic: how about a wealth command to see total $$ in bank and
in inventory:)
Mahamne: regarding the "most" list, how about the poeple with the most
heros?
Kelemvor: When playing hangman for money, we should, perhaps, get extra
money for winning it without any misses. Like double money or money and
a half.
Xyganthos: what about a musich command and a gtellh (<---more useful)?
ZombyWoof: I noticed when I'm sleeping, I can't see my 'chats' echoed on
the screen, if I'm drunk I don't know how it comes out, why not have it
echo when asleep?
Micel: how about a tracking ability for dwarves so one can track down a mob
PenDragon: This WILL displease the Druids and Elves here but here goes.
How 'bout any sort of cityguards that sees a drunk player gets fined? AND
THIS IS JUST AN IDEA!
@>--------------------(Suggestions)--------------------------------
Hi..you haven't met me yet.. I am the traveling TORIS...My name came
from the American Tourist suitcase that sits right beside my CPU...I
originally called my char Touris....but for some reason...HINT HINT...it
is an illegal name now...HUM I WONDER WHY???
Anyway...the reason I am writing is cause I have a suggestion about
pets. It would be nice to be able to armor pets..after all..you can
cast spells on them...We buy these pets to be life long
companions...(yeah, right) ...so it is fitting that we be able to take
care of them....
OK..that's my 2.5 cents worth...see ya on the MUD!!!!!!
how about the longer you have a weapon
the more adept you become with it... note this would make age really
worth something// tie it in with it if a person has a weapon in thier
wielded hand after so much time they would be adept to it and provide
more damage this would be a minus in getting better weapons but a plus
on holding onto yor lower level weapons instead plus i would just like
to added my two sense if we have a bird race why not a cat one they
could be natural enemies of each other and you could tie them in with
having abad group cause they cannot get along tofgether mind the
spelling skywalkerx
Ok, i was bored, and my server was down, so i decided to get a life and
think up some ideas.
Proximus' neato idea #1: Explosives (Oil flasks). These could be
projectiles, but could be only used once, and VERY VERY expensive. You chuck
the flask to a nearby room, or to a mob, and if your lucky, it explodes,
causing HEAVY damage to the mob. Also, there could (maybe) be a saving throw
for this, like a 'disarm bomb' sorta thing. This could either be a normal
projectile or an area attack. Also, maybe if your dexterity is too low, you
don't throw the bomb fast enough, and it explodes in your hand, causing
heavy damage to you.
Proximus' nifty idea #2: Deflect: deflects off projectiles (or feathers.
I've noticed that avians' feathers, when flung, cause a lot of damage, and
unlike backstab, feathers can be flung again, as long as you have a lot of
feathers :P). You may need a weapon for this, and you basicly take your
weapon, and bat the projectile off. Also, you may have to be quick enough to
deflect the projectile off.
Proximus' spiffy idea #3: Trip. It doesn't really make sense for you to trip
someone, and not affect their damage. It should render the mob offguard for
a round, not letting them to hit you as hard. Of course, it shouldn't take
off much of their damage, since people will just keep using it over and
over. It just seems common sense.
Proximus' cool idea #4: Have specified equipment that affects what you are
doing. For example, if you were wearing wings on your arms, you could fly.
Or maybe a form of 'goggles/glasses' allow you to detect invis and/or
hidden. Certain boots may allow you to sneak, or a cloak allow you to hide.
I think this would be cool.
Proximus' really neat idea #5: I've seen in previous newsletters about
charisma, or social class. I think armor should affect your charisma. Like
if your wearing really good armor, and you have lots of gold on hand, a
shopkeeper may be delighted to offer you business. But if you are wearing
crummy armor, and have little gold on hand, a shopkeeper may refuse you
business. Basiclly, social armor class (heh heh).
Proximus' last idea (#6): I'm not sure if this has been suggested before,
but race-aggro mobs.
Proximus, just spent his last 2 cents ;)
Forgot a couple skills while I was typing out that little novel...
MORE FEATURED SKILLS
LASH: Uses tail to trip mob and the same time inflicts damage.
SANDKICK: A dirtkick of sorts. Attempts to blind mob.
SNAKEBITE: Taint weapon skill.
Other skills common to thieves
detect trap
detect poison
-Ladywolf
new skill:
Precognition: allows the ill to see probable outcome of a course of action,
game uses: kinda of a detect aggro. They would cast percognition west to
see what would happen if they went west, if an aggro was there they would
get a bad feeling....me the outcome cryptic or like the fortunes in the
Black eight ball:)
Or give them two of the cool skills from other races:
Know location: i track for ills
Control Body: charm for ills or may be they can suppress the need for food
and water for a short time....a slow drain in mana but no loss of hit points.
i hope this is helpful:)
Ralph
I have a problem/question that has nothing to do with our topic. Im using
a macintosh performa 6400/200. The telnet program i use to get into MUD is
NCSA telnet. Its not giveing me color. i know its not you guys because
all my settings are set to color. Do you know of a telnet ansi program???

> Lysta: When someone sleeping is talk to (usign tell) he receives the

I like this one
> Ghandi: I Think dwarves should have a skill like teleport/astral/suimmon/ or
track...
As a Dwarf, I like this one too. Maybe a skill called hunt, but it would only
work on a Mob within, say 15 steps of the player. Track is already too powerful.
(imho)
> Hardishane: since cr's are a privelige (spelling?) and not a right I
> think pass door should be available at much lower levels... ie elves at
> 10 and all others in the level 12 range -but- still out of guild.
Maybe make an item like the Ghost Stone, but for much lower players.
New Idea...
How about a Serpent race? Could have cool attacks like Poisonous Bite (No
initial damage, but poisons the MOB), Quick Strike (maybe similar to Backstab),
Cobra Strike (High DAM skill). Other skills may include track ({Player} tastes
the air and an evil glint appears in his eyes). Maybe some Armor spells like
Steel Scales, and Healing spells like Shed Skin (sheds damaged skin and regains
50 HP). Oh, and being a snake, it could produce it's own anti-venom, so Cure
Poison would be an in-guild skill. Another possibility would be for this race
not to have any arms or legs, but exceptional attack spells and use of venemous
fangs.
- Sykle
Crymson's replies:
> Ghandi: I Think dwarves should have a skill like
teleport/astral/suimmon/ or track...
dwarves get the extra strength bonuses that compensates for the transfer
spells. plus they also are the tanks of the group as well.. just group
with a druid and he/she could summon anything for you.. plus you have
someone else there to help you get xp.
> Hardishane: since cr's are a privelige (spelling?) and not a right I

that's what clericus is for... an invis spell is not that expensive.
> CuR: how about making it possible to be creative and put digits in one's

do you realize how much of a pain in the butt it would be to type:
tell --==**>>??! hello ??????? the creativity of names can be done with
just normal letters... and a name like UareCr8ive would be annoying as
hell.
> Foxy: why don't you alter the names of some of the socials that have now become skills?

most of them have changed.. just learn to spell every thing out :P

Hello Realmers! You may know me as Aerol, but in real life my name is
Ricky. I live in Florence, SC, though I wish that I lived somewhere in the
north, preferably Pennsylvannia. I'm 16, and am in the 11th grade at West
Florence High School(GO KNIGHTS!). My hobbies include drawing(and Art in
general), swimming, band, computers, girls(though they cause me so much
trouble :) ), and MUDding of course :) I play both the Tenor Sax and the
piano, and am in the marching, jazz, and concert bands at my school. I got
internet access this summer, and eventually stumbled upon Barren Realms by
accident. Since then I've been hooked. My first character was a kender
named Shadin, for those of you who might remember his short life. After
getting frustrated with him I moved on to many more characters, until I
settled on this one. Heroing took me forever(or it seemed like it), and
this just goes to show that no matter how many times you die, you should
keep trying. Enough cheese, though :) BTW, if you see Shadin running
around, that is my character brought back for fun(elf now). Anyway, I don't
plan to quit on BR anytime soon, not until I hero a character of every race.
If you ever want to e-mail me, just profile me and go ahead, I won't mind as
long as you're friendly :) Well, enough of my spiel. Happy Mudding!
-Aerol
-Shadow Knight
of the Black Moon
My name is really Cherye, as most of you on Barren know me......however, I
also am Brenna(named after my ferret who is named after a celtic goddess),
Rhiannon, goddess of equines(even though she is an avian) and Weenie(because
I was bored and it sounded like a good name for a kender). Like Jett, I'm
also a military brat, my dad was in the navy and is now currently in the
army. I'm 22, and a senior at Randolph-Macon Colllege in Richmond Virginia.
I'm an English major who now wants to be a Comp-sci major too, but I have to
wait until after I graduate before I can worry about that, unfortunately.
I've been playing on Barren since about February, and then more I play, the
more addicted I get. I come from a really weird family, my father is
addicted to computers. Every couple months he buys a new one, and has been
doing so ever since we got our family TRS 80 about 1982- so, thanks to him,
I have quite a facination for the silly things. My little brother and sister
also play Barren, thanks to me...you may know my brother as Ghandi,
Tasselhoff, Novum, HamstrCrab, and few others that I forget at the moment
as well. My little sister is Mesaana, but she is presently fighting with the
internet at William and Mary and hasn't been able to get on much, to her
disappointment. As many of you know, Jett is my extremely significant other,
but you won't always see us on at the same time, because we're always
fighting over his computer. Its pretty sad, but thats about the only thing
we do fight about. We actually became good friends while playing Barren,
but it took a rather idiotic game of I Never to finally get us together. He
seems to be pretty clueless when girls hit on him. I practically had to
throw myself at him, and it STILL took one of my friends telling him for him
to realize I liked him. He is my best friend, and the most important person
in my life(sound familiar?). We're pretty disgusting, both on and off
Barren, and we're never apart......as Jett said, we are moving in together
at the end of the spring semester, and we already have a kitten(named Jett
strangely enough), a ferret(Brenna), and a bunch of goldfish. Ummm..well, I
guess thats about it for me..I'd direct you to my webpage, but one of my
idiotic friends managed to erase the whole thing a week ago, and I haven't
had time to make a new one *sigh*. See you on Barren.........

Doomhammer: rather than say a whole bunch of junk when drunk why not say
stupid things instead like..."I'm a stupid idiot or something
Jun: How about instead of screaming when dying, the unlucky player

Windancer: Could there maybe a plastic surgeon for Avian heroes, so we

Doomsaw: when a creature is blinded it shouldn't be able to parry or dodge
Corn: why not make it so pets and mercs autoassist?
Zababa: Is it possible to put a limit on how many items there may be one

with no problems at all. WOuld making trading better as well :)
Turanis: A feature to let you write your own names/descriptions for your
vehicles
Cord: why not have tellh, chath, ect work while you are asleep?
PenDragon: How about more skills for Avians to learn AFTER level 35!
Smilofax: 'Telekinise Weapon' - Renamed '2nd attack' for Ill. Possibly a
timed spell.
Mandwe:
Instead of just having -race- and habing all skills you have be determined
by the race, have race and a proffesion. The race determines physical
charecteristics, like weight, movement and stuff, your stats are rolled
randomly with bonuses and negatives added to it, and then your
proffesion detirmines what skills you have i.e. Thies has track, steal,
backstab, picklock- while a sorceror would have spells, paladins having a
mix in-between and such- It would add a lot more flexibility and give
people the feeling of more control over there character.

I think the level range for Olympus should be listed in as 5-35
instead of 5-30. I get "lucky day" on a lot of mobs, and the ones I have
killed have eq up to level 34.
Also, in the "English description" for AC, the best I have seen is "You
are divinely armored". That is for an AC of about -250 to -300. Is there
anything better than "divinely armored", or does the effect max out in
this range like HR and DR do once you go over about 25?

Okay, you wanted comments, so this is what Nobody thinks: *grin*
---------
> Criterion: maybe the profile command should say the last time that

Nobody:
I've suggested this before...I always thought it was a good idea...
especially if you're looking for someone. If it's a security issue, might
want to limit it to heroes or something...
Scavenger: Very good idea. If you see that it says that you have logged
in at a time that you _know_ that you didn't, you know that your account
has been hacked. You can then change your password. A lot better than
having your character deleted.
Erika:
If you ask an imm nicely they can tell you the last time someone was on I
think, and it's not that important to know.
Hardishane:This would be okay if it is optional...like toggle on/off.
Personally its nobody's business when I was last on.
> Xyganthos: it would be safer if one would need to type his/her password

Nobody: with all the college people online, this is NOT a bad idea. :)
Erika:
This seems like a good idea even though I don't think a lot of people are
deleted by someone else when they don't want to be. Oh and maybe you
should play somewhere else if you can't trust people there.
Scavenger: Also a good idea, although I believe that there are other
precautions taken against accidental or malicious deletion.
> Berry: a skill for druids to go into a deep sleep and regen faster
> (perhaps just regen hp faster)
Nobody: Druids are powerful enough (and awesome enough) as is... gotta be
some limitations somewhere.
Hardishane:I think this is still a good idea but not sure how it would be done.=
Possibly a spell called 'trance' for druids, illithids and elves.
Automatically putting you into a deep catatonic state for 1 tick for every
10 levels of the cast. i.e.. level 32 would sleep 3 ticks. The drawback is
if attacked during this time you can not cast any spells for the first 3
rounds. However the normal skills like dodge and parry would still work
during this time. This spell could not be cast on others.

in real life? Or are you trying to pummel them to death with your shield?
> Testy: How about bags in the general store?
Nobody: It's not like Croben's is hard to find...
Erika: Yes! The general store needs to have some kind of container all the time.
Hardishane:Thats what crobin the container salesman in solace is for. I
wish it was easier to find though. The sign on the south path helps but an
awful lot of lowbies end up finding fewmaster toede.

This is a good idea instead of typing in exactly how much gold you have
and after all we have a put all command.
> Foxy: How about in the identify spell it tells you what part of your body

Erika: This happens to other people simply logon with another char(make a new
character if you have to) then tell an imm to disconnect you. This
really can't be fixed as far as I know.
Hardishane: I think this is already in the hands of the coders.. :)

Or actually... is there a way to keep drunk people out of the city? or
out of shops? NO PUBLIC DRUNKENNESS! *grin*
Erika: One comment: Fine the drunkards! :)
Hardishane:Now you did it! I call all fellow druids to attention. From
this day= hence... PenDragon can not receive the services we offer. :)
j/k The game encourages us to drink. Why penalize (spelling?) us for it?

Bad idea. Gold is gold is gold to a shopkeeper. If you can pay, then
excellent. (Of course, if you're drunk... see above note... rofl!)
Best thing I've ever seen charisma do on most any game is having mobs
react more positively towards you or shopkeepers giving you a better deal
on buying/selling eq... but then, that's if the charisma stat is even
added to BR...

Right, an invis spell is fine... but how do you get thru a locked door
that your corpse is on the other side of, with no equipment, no weapons,
and you barely killed the keyholder the FIRST time you tried WITH
weapons...
Maybe make pass door available from Clericus??

If you could lock your tent you would lose the true spirit of wilderness
:). I havent heard of anyone else having this problem and you can always
leave the aggro area to go to sleep.
> Foxy: how about underwater pets?
erika :If you want a pet to go underwater with you buy a mercenarie and
equip it with squba gear. Underwater pets seem kinda useless because
there aren't many times you need your pet to go underwater.
> Deuces: if you use a charmed mob to attack another mob, and that mob turns

erika:
If you are grouped with the charmed mob which is usually the point of
charming mobs then you will fight back with autoassist. Yes you should
fight back though and I don't think all mobs should automaticlly see you
as the sourc of the attack they should at least have to make a saving roll
and if they fail they should attack the charmed mob or something.
> Deuces: Here's a fun idea: Magic mirrors, you give one to your

erika: What command's could you possibly want to give to your pet long
distance? Besides if you made it fight while you were away it would
probably flee right away.
> CuR: how about a code that allows us to take one bite out of a piece of

Erika: There's already plenty of food to go around. Unless you want to

Food is so easy to get and plentiful now days.. misfired spells all over :)
I don't think druids even need the create food or create water spell=
anymore.
> Deuces: How about a ring of regeneration? It'd be a tough item to get,
> but would significantly boost rate of healing.
erika: Sounds great but we don't really need it just sleep more or get
pills that heal you, or even a staff that heals you.
Hardishane:I think if you were going to have a piece of eq to make faster
regen it should be something worn 'on body' that would not be a good of
armor code as you can usually find and no remove to keep people from only
using hit when healing.
> CuR: how about when you have a purse, and you put coins in on different
> occasions, it consolidadets the total amount and when you look in it
> tells you that?
erika:
This is a good idea. The coins should all group together and you should
be able to count them all so they should all show up as one group when
you look in your container not the many groups you see now.
> Deuces: a quest flag on players who are question so they are easily
> identified by all
erika: I think you mean a quest flag for people who are in quests. Heros
seem to be able to manage keeping track of all the questers so we don't
really need this.
> Linkless: since there is message if you kill stuff lower level then you

> ZombyWoof: I like the idea of vehicle attacks, also maybe some other
> things can be implemented like the vehicle giving you protection (raise
> ac?) but the thing that keeps me from using one is I can't recall with it :(
erika:
Well if your vehicle can attack that should be the only attack you get
per round(your driving) and it should shield you from all but a few lucky
blows. Your vehicle should also become damaged in the fight with the
possiblity of it becoming destroyed. Of course then we would need
mechanics to repair broken vehicles.

I don't understand what the point of this is kender can use sneak and
hide already without losing hp and mana. Perhaps you mean be able to use
sneak and hide while they have glowing, humming, armor on. If thats what
you mean then i don't think it should cost hp to use it.

> Mahamne: regarding the "most" list, how about the poeple with the most
> heros?
erika: Is there going to be a "most" list? If so I want a spot for most
deaths.
> Kelemvor: When playing hangman for money, we should, perhaps, get extra
> money for winning it without any misses. Like double money or money and
> a half.
erika: Thats a good idea. You get extra money for blackjacks.
> Xyganthos: what about a musich command and a gtellh (<---more useful)?
erika: You could just ask 'em what they said. But I don't make these
decisions so never mind.
Hardishane: gtellh would be WONDERFUL!
> ZombyWoof: I noticed when I'm sleeping, I can't see my 'chats' echoed on
> the screen, if I'm drunk I don't know how it comes out, why not have it
> echo when asleep?
erika: Can you hear youself talk and understand what you're saying while
you are asleep?
> Micel: how about a tracking ability for dwarves so one can track down a mob
erika: Dwarves DO NOT need track and if they get it then avians should get
all there armor slots back.
Hardishane: Hate to say since I love my tanking buddies... But dwarves
are big, dumb and stupid and I think the ability to track would be way out
of character. Unless drastic limits were put on it. Like be within 20
steps.
>pets. It would be nice to be able to armor pets..after all..you can
>cast spells on them...We buy these pets to be life long
>companions...(yeah, right) ...so it is fitting that we be able to take
>care of them....
Hardishane:
Well...we do have mercs you can purchase and they can wear armor
and wield weapons.
> Berry: a duck skill for kender thats works like another dodge
>
SCavenger: When would you have time to attack with all that ducking and
dodging? ;-)

scavenger: You probably don't have the latest version of NCSA Telnet.
The last supported version was 2.6. However, there was a 2.7 version that
never made it out of beta. This version supported ANSI/vt220 color codes.
You can get it at .
However, you may want to check out NiftyTelnet for regular telneting
and a dedicated MUD
client for mudding. You can find a list of Mac MUD clients at
. The one you probably want to check out
is Tinkeri View .

Here it goes...My character in BR is Greydeath, my real name is Jerry
Smith, I was born on July 31st of 1981, I was raised in Altamonte
Springs, Florida...where I am currently living. I learned of BR from c
ouple of my friends, one of them being Drakar...It took me about 4-6
months to hero, so don't feel bad if it takes you a while. I like to
work with computers, I also build them. I play football with my friends
a little bit, and being 6'3, and about 215 lbs, I'm pretty good at it...
I am currently in my Sophomore year of High School, I attend Lake
Brantley High School in which I participate in the band. If you're
curious I play the tuba...>:) I am in mostly honor classes, I have no
idea what my GPA is, nor do I really care...I also like to play RPGs and
such, like Robotech, and Battletech, from which I got my name from, the
Greydeath Legion as it is known in Btech. I enjoy watching anime,
spending time with my friends, and hanging out on BR...In the future I
plan on attending the University of Florida, and recieving at least a
Bachelor's or maybe even a Master's degree in Computer Science or
something related to that. Well, that's about all I can think of to tell
you about me, though I'm sure you're getting a time out warning from
your server or something, oh well, cya on BR...take care...
Greydeath,
Your "Friendly" Killer...>:)
OK, I don't know about the name quest except it appears in the newsletter-
Here it goes-
How I got the name mandwe... Will it started out on previes muds, I was
known as sirbean, sirbeano, beano, beanman, bisquit, fruitcake, etc etc
But I experienced lack of respect, even when I was H vala (1 level lower
then implementor). I got annoyed, so after a few of those MUds closed
down, I found barren realms, I was reading a vampire novel called 'Memnoch
the Devil' in which there is someone called mandwe, I liked mandwe so I
chose that. Maybe it is a inner desire to be a vampire that affected this
desicion, or maybe I was drunk, I don't know, But that is why I choose my
name mandwe
This letter is brought to by: The knights who say NI!
