I apologize for not having sent a newsletter in a while. I just started law school 2 weeks ago and I'm still working out my final two weeks at my job. Feel free to drop me a line to let me know what you're up to if you haven't been around in a while. I'm always interested to hear what people are doing :) Ska: what about drunks understanding other drunks? Arcane: here's an idea, howabout you put my idea's in the newsletter Firestar: Just a silly idea...but, what about having a spell where you can make objects invisible for a short period of time...or just working that into the already existing invisibility spell?? Arcane: concentrate means you can't use 'say' Gwen: *Just for fun* Mobs should be given some poses for when they're charmed glared.... Anubis: make it so that you can turn peek on and off. Either that, or put a screen pause when you look at someone if it's over so and so lines. I'm using telnet and most of the time I can't see what ppl are actually wearing. Responses by Snipa: Nugad: Dwarves should also get berzerk.. since they are basically the main fighters.. so they should get berzerk as an OOG skill.. thats one of the ideas in the news letter i disagree with that idea... Dwfs alrdy have a spell like that (frenzy) so why should Dwarves have 2 increases in hit/dam from 2 spells Thanks Responses by Slart: > Ideas: > > Stonehenge: Umm, how about getting rid of 0 hours left on a spell > and having the spell disappear after 1 hour? I guess I don't have a problem with things being zero-based (starting at zero), since I'm a computer person. It makes sense to me the way it is. > Kharn: i dont think things like aff, inf or eq should be affected by > spell lag in combat. They are not actions like a kick. You're probably right, but sorting out informational commands from activity commands would be more trouble than I think it would be worth in terms of game play. > Roshi: just thought that i might bring up the idea of banning heroes > from the current arena and making a new arena that only heroes could > get to..also making the current arena no-tp/astral etc > > Kiri - we are going to do this, eventually, and also having a view > command so you can watch a fight without being able to get attacked. > Kharn: there should be a hack, an auction ect. I think most people would rather use it for things like cool new areas. :) > Zylo: add a direction to flee, Syntax: flee direction. So if your > fighting an aggro mob that's garding the only way out and you can't > kill him, you can make sure you flee in the right direction, and if > you dont' put a direction, it just picks a random This would be awfully powerful. I could see it as an advanced skill, maybe for kender, but not as part of flee. > Everybody: a spell allowing you to recharge staffs/wands could be > nifty. give more use to staves and wands in general. maybe set it so you > had to cast the "new" spell at it, then the spell (like sanc, or whatever) > to add one charge to it > > Kiri -- I really like that. So do I. That's a neat idea. Might be tough to pull off, though. I can see recharge being an elf spell, but not all wands/staves use elf spells. I suppose the item could go into some kind of recharging state while the elf ran around trying to find a druid or illithid with the appropriate spell. > AMystery: mental barrier is too powerful. there should be a chance > an attack will get through Oddly, I haven't really seen a tremendous surge in illithid heroes recently. Out of 22 players currently on BR (I'm on in another window), there are zero illithids. So, even if it's too powerful, I think we'll stick with the current plan. You'll just have to be more careful when it comes to backstabbing those pesky avatars in the arena, Amy... ;) > Bloodmaul: since it's so hard to find a mob you are looking for... > how about a way to track inside the area? So, if you are in the area, you > can track mobs in that area... Sucks when you have to guess which mob is > the one you want > > Anni: no misteleport to an area more than 20lvls higher Soapbox time... Track/summon/teleport is the most powerful skill in the game. Yes, more powerful than sanctuary and enchant weapon, which are available from items all over the realms. I think it's even more powerful than enhanced damage. Why? Because it lets people level without learning where things are. Given that it's the most powerful skill in the game, I can't say I'm in favor of making it even more powerful and easier to use. *Steps off soapbox...* > Smaug: can we make it so that mobs can't flee while tripped? or at > least tripped via tailsweep? This is a bug, in my opinion, with trip that's been around forever as far as I know. It's toward the bottom of a very long list, but it's on the list. > See: It should keep your scores in games, like Connect Four and stuff > like that then have a command to reset your score or something like > that. This isn't a bad idea, but it's a pain to keep track of, and meaningless if you let people reset it. Besides, I think pfiles are already big enough... > Kai: variable in prompt code that lets you see the group's tank's hitpoints This has been suggested before. It's not a bad idea, but it would be for only about two or three percent of BR's players, which makes it a little hard for me to get excited about it. > Packor: you know you can sleep and rest, and after that stand while > being carried. maybe carry should be tosses you onto his back(can > still be when they get claws) Carry was originally implemented a little loosely. I don't think it affects gameplay much, so I'll probably just tighten it up sometime in my Copious Leisure Time (heh heh), which means expect to see this fixed sometime in 2021. > Loom: it should be possible to make tell messages while sleeping > because the regeneration phase is a good time to have a little chat. > > Kiri -- this is why I wanted a dream channel at one time. I can't think of a really good reason why you can't do that, especially since we (I think) already changed it so people can receive tells in their sleep. I think telling and getting tells was originally prevented while people were asleep in the name of realism. For us, I think it just generates inane personal traffic on chat. It's a pretty simple fix, I think; a lot simpler than a new channel. Kiri? Kiri - sure. Add tells for sleepers. > Icecold: can't we make dirtkick hit the mob we are fighting anyhow? > yes, i know, it'll hit the mob whose name i typed in, but i am used to > abbreviating. and it doesn't work this way for spells, either... Yes, this should be consistent, but isn't. It's on The List... > Tanis: A way to speed up spells from the instructor so newbies don't > get sick of sitting there waiting for a spell up I can think of no greater injustice, no sadder tragedy, no more telling example of man's inhumanity to man, than for a perfectly innocent person to have to wait a few WHOLE EXTRA MINUTES to get something FOR FREE. At his birth he was given the name Innish, which in their magical language meant, healer of great strength. The songs and praises of his birth in the Holy Grove could be heard as far north as Calathar. People from far and near came to pay their tribute. Even the great Gods of Mount Olympus came bearing gifts and glory. The celebration continued for days. While those in in the Grove had their grand celebration, a young woman sat idly in a secluded cabin, hidden well from the world amongst the Vallen Woods. She sat there because she had no choice, as under her lay a single pear shaped egg, colored a brilliant gold. This was no ordinary woman. She was an Avian, one of the strange birdlike humanoid creatures that dwell within the realms. She had been there for months, guarding her egg, eating only what stumbled into the cabin by accident, and protecting herself by flinging her own feathers. When finally, the egg began to move. The mother quickly hopped off of her nest and stood there anxiously waiting for the child inside to break through the golden surface . When finally, a small hand tore through the shell into the light. The mother gently took her beak and began removing the rest of the shell, and there, inside, lay a perfect child. The mother pulled the baby from the remains of the egg shell and held her lovingly to her breast, and securely folded her wings around them both. And softly said to herself, " I shall call you Madoria." The years passed, and in the Holy Grove, Innish was growing into a wonderful teacher and healer. By age 13 he was already a towering 6 feet 7 inches tall. His mother and father saw to it that he was schooled by the greatest teachers of the Realms, including Clericus and Goldmoon the healers, and the monks of the White Tower. He spent endless hours every day, practicing his spells and skills with his teachers. But when he could slip away, he enjoyed wandering the paths of the grove alone. And on occasion found small animals that were injured or snared, and used the great spells he was gifted with to heal them and set them free. As Innish grew and prospered in the Grove, Madoria too grew and learned a great deal of things. By age 5, she had a grand beak which she could easily peck and obtain her prey. But age 10 her wings had begun to grow from her back, and no longer had to rely on her legs to walk, as she could hover wherever she went, and no longer depended on pecking to stun her prey, but could now dive furiously out of the sky and impale them with her beak. Her mother took great time and care to teach her all of the skills and many responsibilities that accompany being an Avian, reminding her every day that they were not to be misused. Madoria was very obedient to her mother and listened attentively to all that she was taught. One day, just after Madoria turned 13, her mother asked her travel to Calathar and acquire a few things that they needed for their cabin. And with great excitement, (as her mother had never before asked her to travel there alone) Madoria took to the air and flew east into the great central City. After visiting the baker and the grocer, and securing the items that she had purchased in her pack. She decided she would take some time and explore. Her mother was always in such a hurry to return to the woods and had never allowed her to venture anywhere else. She flew around happily, taking time to wave and speak happily with the citizens and guards of the city. She flew further and further, until she found herself at the Southern Gates. She stopped to inquire of the guards what was beyond these gates, and told her of the terrible graveyard, and the grand circus, and the beautiful city of Perelandra. Thinking that she would like to see something as beautifully white as the city they spoke of at the end of this path, she excitedly flew south. After a bit, it met with an eastern path, which she decided was the graveyard, and then a little further was a path heading west with a sign that that pointed out that the circus was that way. and then a few miles further was another sign. Madoria wondered to herself, " I don't remember the guards mentioning this." The sign read "The Holy Grove Lies east." Raising her eyebrows in question, and thinking for a moment, she decided she would go just a little way down this path and see what was there. The further she traveled the more safe and wonderful she began to feel. And then as she flew a little further, she saw a small rabbit stuck in a bush and gently lowered herself to the ground to investigate. The rabbit was not hurt, but simply had his foot hung in a limb, and carefully she knelt down to free him, but just as she touched his foot with her hand, another hand from the other side of the bush did as well. She drew her hand back quickly and let out a small startled shriek. and just as she was about to take into the air again, Innish popped his head up from behind the bush. Bright eyed and cheerful as he always was, he began to walk towards her, and she did he introduced himself. " Hello!" he said happily, " I'm Innish." Madoria on the other had was shy and uneasy with strangers, and did nothing but rub her toe sheepishly in the dirt. And again she began to flap her wings when Innish called out "Wait! Please don't go. I never get to meet new people and especially not new creatures as beautiful as the one before me now." Madoria stopped and looked behind her, feeling sure there must be someone else there, but there was no one and she finally spoke. "Are ... you. Are you talking to me?" she questioned in almost a whisper. "Well, of course I am you silly goose, there is no one else here!" Innish replied with a smile. But Madoria snapped back at him "I am not a Goose, I am an Avian!" Innish giggled to himself and explained to her that it was merely a figure of speech and he hoped he had not offended her. Upon hearing this, Madoria felt quite silly, and could control her laughter no longer and laughed out loud! The two sat together for hours, talking of their different races and skills. Innish showed off with his newly learned spells. And being that he was still new at it, an occasional ball of light or spring would appear. And Madoria chuckled politely to herself. She showed off her wings, and her dive skill, and did tricks in the air. And then landed again by his side. The two talked and talked, until the sun began to set, and realizing the time, Madoria bid him farewell and took to the sky. Innish called loudly behind her "Wait, When will I see you again?" but she had flown too far to hear him and she never looked back. She hurried her way back to Calathar and then west to the Vallen Woods, where she found her mother outside weeping uncontrollably. Quickly she lowered herself and ran over to her mother and asked what was wrong. " Oh dear child where have you been? There is much danger beyond the safety of these woods, and I was terrified that you had met your doom." Madoria assured her that all was well, and began to tell her of the grand afternoon that she had had with the young Druid. " A Druid!" her mother exclaimed. "Madoria I will not hear of you seeing this young man again!" shocked Madoria replied "But mother, we did nothing wrong, and I so enjoy being with him," this angered her mother and in her rage stood up and scolded her daughter "No more I said! I will not tolerate it. They are not like us, and no daughter of mine will be in the company of one. Is that quite clear?" But Madoria could not answer as her sobs were too great and she ran from her mother to her room in the house, threw herself on her bed and wept until she fell asleep. Just as Madoria, Innish had met great resistance from his mother and father. But to add to his pain and worry, they informed him that he was betrothed since birth to a Druidess from another Realm. Innish could not contain his anger nor his sorrow, and ran away from his mother and father into the grove. Again years passed, and Innish and Madoria, being obedient as they were to their parents did not see each other. But neither was far from the others mind. They both continued to grow. And by 20 years of age, Innish had climbed to 7 feet 3 inches, and had become a master Healer. Madoria had grown great claws and was an accomplished hunter and warrior. But no matter how they changed in appearance and knowledge, the feelings and memories from that day in the grove still burned brightly inside the two of them. More time passed, and soon it was the appointed time of Innish's marriage. The news of the great celebration spread throughout the realms and when it finally traveled it's way to Madoria, she was so over come with sadness that she could neither move nor speak. And because she knew nothing of the betrothed arrangement, believed that he had forgotten her. But sorrow was great within Innish, as did not love the Druidess that would become his wife in a few short hours. His heart was taken by the beautiful, graceful, Avian, when she rose into the air all those years before. As he sat and thought of her, his sorrow turned to anger and determination and once he gained the courage, stormed to his mother and father. "If you force me to marry this Druidess I will surely die!" he exclaimed. But his mother and father could not see, nor did they want to see, just how much he loved Madoria. And after sending Innish back to his room to await the matrimony, they turned their attention back to the guests that were beginning to arrive. Innish, entered his room, but had one final plan in mind. The last thing that the great Healer Clericus had taught him, was how to astral himself to other beings in the realm. Innish sat on his bed, and began to concentrate all that he could. And all at once, he began to fade out of existence. When he began to materialize again,he was in a small run down cabin, and there before him lay his love, Madoria. Her mother came running into the room as she could her the noises thinking Madoria had again begun to move or speak. But when she saw the giant Innish standing there she took quickly to the air and prepared to attack him. But he begged her to let him speak with Madoria, just for a moment. And though she did not want to allow it, the Avian mother was so worried for her daughter, that she granted him 5 minutes and no more. Innish sat down on the bed beside his beloved Avian, and took her hand in his. And softly he spoke "Please my love, Madoria, Please return to me." In amazement her mother stood and watched as Madoria's eyes began to flutter and then open, and she sat up slowly and embraced Innish. Her mother then knew that Madoria truly did love him, and though she did not approve, she could not suffer seeing her daughter in such anguish again. So she allowed them to remain there together, and Innish placed a protective magical barrier around the cabin, and caused a maze to spring up in the Vallen Woods, so they could remain there in safety from his parents and others who may try to seek them. Madoria and Innish were married soon after, by the great King Arthur who being a dear friend of the Avian mother, swore that he would take the secret to his grave. They lived happily there for a very long time, but Madoria's mother became ill, and though Innish tried he could not save her as she was very old and quite ready to pass on to the spirit world. Though there were many tears and much sadness as Madoria's mother died, she and Innish still remained quite happy together. Many eggs were hatched in that cabin in the Vallen Woods, and Madoria and Innish had 15 children and uncountable grandchildren, who were all Avian in feature, and later in life developed Druid spells like Astral. And they became great members of the realms. Madoria and Innish never left their cabin, as he could create all the food and water they needed and could heal very well. And though no one has seen them in hundreds of years, among the Vallen Woods lies a tiny cabin, and inside you will find a Druid and an Avian just as much in love now as they were when they met so long ago in the Holy Grove. And in the essay catagory: Barren Realms Reflections The thunder rolled across the virtual skies and the electronic lightning crackled fiercely, but in the Realms, all was well, for the aura of friendship and helping was there to protect the cowering newbies and the towering heroes alike. The Barren Realms are as barren as a city is lifeless. The Realms is a mini-world of comradeship. When I come home from school, discouraged after a day of being put down,I can log onto the Realms, and immediately there are players crowding into be friendly. From the gratz messages on leveling, to the flow of help when a question is asked, to the race to guide the newbies through their first hours, the Realms are like an ideal image of the real world: conflictsare quickly solved, friendships are repaired, and even though hiding behind the anonymous identity of your character means one could come in and yell and curse one's head off, these instances are so rare they almost don't exist. I am convinced that even prison convicts and psychopathic killers would turn sweet and helpful on the Realms. It is a perfect atmosphere for questing and adventuring; it is a real RPG, where the characters should be united and there should be no losers. -Brightstar- Remember you can see all the other entries at: http://w3.ime.net/~bones/brquest.htm Bluei Kiri's WWW of URLs: Nothing to Say -- an interesting page of ideas: http://nothingtosay.dyndns.org/ Chad Walker's Drawings. MB is the way it is because of the way Illithids are, its very obviously a tank spell... Its perfectly balanced if you take into account the other weaknesses Illithids have and what they have given up for the spell. Maybe it should be banned in the arena for Avatars... (if thats your primary prob with it.) If your prob is with it in general, then I again, disagree, I think the illithids are finely balanced. (Avatars will *never* be "balanced") Bloodmaul: since it's so hard to find a mob you are looking for... how about a way to track inside the area? So, if you are in the area, you can track mobs in that area... Sucks when you have to guess which mob is the one you want Life's a journey... Just because something is hard doesn't neccessarily make it bad. Maybe this could be implimented, but part of the fun is trying to figure out which one you want... Smaug: can we make it so that mobs can't flee while tripped? or at least tripped via tailsweep? Sounds resonable, but I was under the impression that they couldn't as it stands now... See: It should keep your scores in games, like Connect Four and stuff like that then have a command to reset your score or something like that. Huh? Anni: no misteleport to an area more than 20lvls higher Hmm, I kinda agree with this, but I kinda don't. On one hand, misteleports well, suck. On another, teleport is a POWERFUL spell and has to have some sort of balance to it. You can always recall too. Maybe no misteleports to agro mobs in *really* high levels above the user. Kai: variable in prompt code that lets you see the group's tank's hitpoints Been asked for, I personally would love to see this since it would make grouping easier. Packor: you know you can sleep and rest, and after that stand while being carried. maybe carry should be tosses you onto his back(can still be when they get claws) Again, huh? Loom: it should be possible to make tell messages while sleeping because the regeneration phase is a good time to have a little chat. Kiri -- this is why I wanted a dream channel at one time. Illithids can do this. :-) For the other races, I recommend ICQ :-) Seriously, since its a skill that a race has, I doubt it will become something everyone gets. Tanis: A way to speed up spells from the instructor so newbies don't get sick of sitting there waiting for a spell up Good stuff takes time, imho newbies need to get patient, or get killed a few times. It doesn't take THAT long for the spells to come up, I think its fine.
